Laptop Versus Desktop Computer Dilemma

Which one is better, laptop or desktop computer? Consider all possible choices to be able to select one that best suits your necessities. Understanding all your options when buying an item can be very attractive making good decisions. Familiarity prior to you buying is at all times the best thing!

If you will be using it only for some work or school works, laptop would be a good selection. But if it is for family use, desktop computers are strongly suggested. These days, you have to be practical. It is important to know your requirements and match it with your resources. The following must be considered when purchasing computers: Cost On the whole, laptops are pricier than a similar desktop computer. Tiny components of a laptop will set you back. If you will use it largely for word processing, reporting and meetings, and to do some researches, laptops will be a sensible choice. On the other hand, video games, video editing and desktop publishing necessitate bigger storage capacity and memory, fine quality video and audio cards. Every element will heighten the cost and the mass of the gadget.

Handiness - If you will need computers wherever you go, laptops are the best choice for they are handy. If you lack space at your residence for the gadget, or if your loved ones will likely need to use the computer in various areas, laptops are highly recommended. If you will just leave the computer at home, just get a desktop.

Upgrades and Repairs - Regardless of whether a lot of things can be upgraded or substituted in laptops, it is quicker to complete upgrades and computer repairs in desktop machines. This must be considered as well. As desktop computers' costs set out to lower, it may in fact be more less expensive to buy a hot new machine, as a substitute for trying to adjust an old one by doing several IT solutions. So, if a part of your laptop was damaged or somebody spills drinks on its keyboard, really it is more severe and it will cost you higher than a comparable destruction on a desktop computer. If you have irreverent kids at home, this must be one of your top considerations.

Ergonomics - Ergonomics means pattern and plan of your working area. You will need to analyse if your working area can supply users a comfy and safe environment. In this scenario, quite a few specifications with regards to a computer working area should be mirrored to forestall back pains, strains and many others. For desktop computers, you have to extra space to put your desktop table with a comfy, moving chair. Even if it is really helpful to create a good computer workstation, others would not mind.

Speed Up My Laptop - How to Speed Up Your Laptop in Minutes

Are you looking for solutions - "how to speed up my laptop"? Do you want to completely speed up laptop performance in a fast way? Fortunately, here are three easy steps you can follow to improve your laptop computer speed without purchasing memory upgrade or a new one. To speed up your laptop, you need to make sure it is free from virus before performing these three steps.

Step 1. Terminate programs running automatically on laptop computer startup. This can speed up your laptop boost up speed effectively. If you download and install programs frequently, there should be many programs running automatically when you start it. That is why your laptop takes too long to let you enter the whole system every time. Try the first step to speed up your laptop performance.

Step 2. Run a disk defrag for your system. How long haven't you detected and cleaned up system fragment? Obviously, fragment in system will slow down the laptop speed and bring more sluggishness to your laptop computer. I highly recommend you run disk defrag once a month to avoid system errors caused by the fragment. You will see that the laptop performance would be speeded up when you clean up fragment regularly.

Step 3. Eliminate registry problems to enhance your laptop speed. This is the most important step you should take to speed your laptop up. Because few of people would realize that registry problems can slow system down. In fact, nearly 80% slow laptop computer issue are related to registry errors. Cleaning up corrupted, invalid and malicious registry entries will not only speed up your laptop but also help you prevent laptop freezes, blue screen of death and system crashes in the future.

Laptop Screen Repair Guide

As we all know, accidents happen. Unfortunately, sometimes those accidents happen to our beloved computers or laptops. Most commonly, laptops will have something dropped on them that will break the laptop screen. In other cases, the laptop itself is dropped only to be picked up with a fractured screen. The damage is done and is irreversible. It's time to consider options: to repair it myself or to use a professional shop. This guide is for the brave computer technicians who are not afraid to work with small parts, fragile plastics and laptop screen panels. Warning! Attempting this laptop repair may void your manufacturer warranty.

A laptop screen is repaired by replacing the current screen with a new one. To do this, you will need to first remove the bezel (plastic frame surrounding the screen). Then you will need to unscrew the metal brackets holding the screen in place. Following that, you will need to unscrew the screen from the brackets. Then you will be able to identify the laptop screen model number and serial information. With that information in hand, you will be able to order a replacement screen online. Once it arrives, unplug the inverter cable from the inverter and unplug the data cable (flex cable) that goes from the laptop to the screen.

With the old screen removed, put the new screen in to place. Do not yet remove any plastic film that is protecting the new screen in case the problem is not solved by the transplant. Plug both wires into the new laptop screen and power up the machine. If the display is properly showing, you are good to go. Remove the plastic film over the screen and begin screwing the laptop screen into the brackets on each side. Once the screen is held in place by the brackets, screw the brackets into the back cover of the laptop. Finally, replace the bezel and any screws that hold it in place.

The laptop screen repair procedure is slightly different from laptop to laptop. Some laptops use a screwless bezel that is held in place by plastic clips. These bezels need to be carefully removed so as to not break off the plastic latches. Once they are broken off, the bezel will not hold in place properly. Older laptops tend to have bezels with many screws (4 to 8) hidden under small round screw covers. You will need to remove the covers and then the screws before peeling off the bezel.

In some rare cases, usually with HP laptops or Sony Vaios, you will not be able to remove the bezel surrounding the laptop screen without first removing the screen entirely from the bottom assembly of the laptop. This requires a more thorough disassembly of the laptop. As with most hardware repairs, I would recommend leaving it to the professionals. While attempting a repair yourself may save a few dollars if the repair is successful, you may run into further difficulties that online guides will not be able to assist you with. Additionally, you will have no warranty on your own repair and may even void your manufacturer's warranty.

How To Find The Best Laptop

If the time has come for you to buy a new computer, you will want to make sure you find the best laptop for your budget. Today, there are literally hundreds of options from which to choose, it is important to be clear on what specifications will best suit your needs if you are to make sure you get a machine that lives up to your expectations and requirements.
First of all, you should ask yourself whether the new laptop will be your main computer or a secondary option. Consider the type of activities you will use it for the most, would it be for surfing the net, conducting business, playing video games, or watching movies and listening to music.
The more exact you can be with your preferred specifications of a new laptop, the easier it will be to short-list a few desirable options. For example, the screen size would be a major consideration. Those computers that have screens smaller than 11 inches are typically referred to as netbooks, a laptop screen can be anywhere in size from 12 inches up to a massive 20 inches. The screen size will determine what the laptop can be used for and how portable it will be.
The operating system is another important consideration. Most new laptops come with an OS pre-installed. If you are familiar with using Windows XP or Vista you may want to continue the trend by choosing a Windows 7 operating system, though if you have past experience of a Linux OS this may be more to you liking.
The physical memory is an essential factor. It would be big mistake to opt for a new laptop that had only 1GB RAM or less, this would not be powerful enough for today's computing tasks. You can choose a laptop with 2, 3, or even 4 GB Ram that should be more than adequate for anyone's needs.

How to Increase Your Laptop's Battery Life for Longer Use

Although many people ignore it, the battery life is one of the most important parts of your laptop, unless you use your notebook for non-portable purposes. The average life of a notebook battery is between two and three hours. Unfortunately, most batteries don't even stand for their minimum reference.

When I bought my laptop, they said that the battery will stand for three to four hours, but it actually stands for much less... What am I supposed to do?

While testing their battery life, most companies are trying to avoid loading high performance on their CPU, HDD and graphics memory, while you are using a huge part of your resources. You could always think about saving some battery life. Here are some effective tips on how to increase your battery life while not charging:

Dim your screen- You can always turn down the brightness of your screen, depending on the light in your room.

Turn down the volume- The volume needs a lot of energy. Turn it down if you are not using an external device with independent battery/charger.

Turn off unused laptop features - For example Bluetooth, or Wireless if you are currently not connected to the internet.

Turn off unused applications and processes - End the background applications that are not in use at the moment. You can monitor the resource usage of all running processes through the "Task Manager" - Ctrl + Shift + Esc..

Also, if you are not connected to the internet, you can feel free to shut down or temporary disable your firewall/anti-virus software.

Schedule Windows updates - While trying to save a battery life, it is not the best time to update your windows. Run these updates when you are charging your battery.

Another big mistake that laptop users always assume is charging the laptop even when its battery is full. Remember: It is recommended to unplug your charger when your battery is full. By this way the battery will get more "training" on its consummation.

What is the difference between sleep and hibernate?

While your laptop is "sleeping", your display and hard drive are turn off. Currently running applications are stored in your RAM, while in hibernation, the applications data is saved to your hard drive. So, use the hibernate mode instead of sleep, because in hibernate mode, your laptop is completely using no power. You may have noticed that in sleep mode your laptop can be woken accidentally, which is another advantage of the hibernate mode.

Guide before buy Laptop

While a laptop has become a ubiquitous accessory for modern life, the actual process of choosing the right model can take some serious time and research.
In this guide, we'll outline the different categories of laptops and which types are best for different users. We'll also take a look at CPU, hard-drive, and networking options.
Below are a handful of typical user experiences that should help outline what type of laptop is right for you. Chances are, you'll fall somewhere in between two or more of these archetypes, so carefully consider what you'll be using your new laptop for.

The student

Students typically require low prices and portability above all. A laptop that can be carried from class to class is key, so many students turn to low-cost Netbooks, which are small, low-power systems that generally cost less than $500. The downside is that these have small screens and generally use underpowered single-core CPUs. Another option is a 13-inch thin-and-light laptop, which is somewhat less portable, but makes for a better experience when sitting down to write papers and do research. These have dual-core CPUs and often include optical drives. Apple's 13-inch MacBook is a prime example.

What to look for: At least 1GB of RAM; 160GB or larger HDD; 13-inch or smaller display.

The business traveler

Those who work on the road require a robust computing experience, a sturdy, rugged system to safeguard data, and often, access to security and management tools to satisfy the requirements of their IT departments. Lenovo's ThinkPad and Dell's Latitude are two popular examples of laptop lines made with the business traveler in mind. Both brands offer security features such as Intel's vPro platform and TPM chips, internal software and hardware components that work alongside your operating system.

What to look for: 2GB to 4GB of RAM; 160GB or larger HDD; 12- to 15-inch display; Windows Vista Professional or Windows 7 Professional; mobile broadband modem.

The photographer and/or videographer
Video game players aren't the only ones who need powerful processors, discrete graphics, and massive, fast hard drives. Those who work with high-definition video or high-resolution photographs are among the most demanding of laptop power users. Apple's 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro laptops are among the most popular for these purposes. This is especially true as Final Cut, the widely used video-editing software, is only available for Macs (Adobe's Photoshop, however, is cross-platform).
Either a 17- or a 15-inch screen that runs at a high native resolution is suggested. You should also look for plenty of RAM--up to 8GB is ideal--and a large 500GB hard drive that runs at the faster 7,200rpm speed (typical drives run at 5,400rpm).

What to look for: 4GB-8GB of RAM; 320GB or larger 7,200rpm HDD; 17-inch or larger display.

The gamer

While a bit of an endangered species these days, PC gamers are among the most fervent user groups. Most serious PC gamers will naturally gravitate toward desktop computers, with their flexible upgradeability, faster components, and better cooling. But gaming laptops have made great strides in recent years. Intel's Core 2 Quad and Core i7 CPUs are recommended for 3D gaming, as is a top-of-the-line discrete GPU, such as Nvidia's GeForce N260. High-end brands such as Alienware offer flashy, expensive laptops that can be customized with the latest components, while Gateway's P-series is a good example of a budget-minded 17-inch gaming laptop, with slightly older parts, but excellent overall value.

What to look for: 4GB to 8GB of RAM; 320GB or larger 7,200rpm HDD; 17-inch or larger display; discrete graphics GPU.

The home user

Anyone who does not fall into one of the above categories is likely to fit in here. From parents and children gathered around the laptop at homework time to watching Hulu videos in bed, these are systems that typically stay anchored to one desk, den, or kitchen--perhaps taking the occasional road trip or moving around from room to room. The traditional 15-inch laptop is still the most popular size, although 14- and 16-inch versions are becoming more common. Every PC maker makes standard mainstream laptops, and they generally have more similarities than differences.
For much less than $1,000, you can expect to find an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB or larger hard drive, and a DVD burner. Usually the most configurable of laptops, you can add extras, including a Blu-ray drive or discrete graphics, to many mainstream models.

What to look for: 2GB to 4GB of RAM; 250GB or larger HDD; 14- to 16-inch display; DVD burning optical drive.
